Hair Wash after Hair Transplant

By hairdoc

Here is another hair loss question from one of my patients in the Los Angeles Hair Transplant office of US Hair Restoration. Patient has had a hair transplant over four weeks ago. He says: I still have a few scabs. It just happened that while shampooing my hair, I ended up accidentally removing a scab and the area underneath the scab appeared red. The area that has gone red, I could not say for sure if there was any bleeding as I would have been washing it at the time with shampoo. May patients get worried when they see hair grafts coming out because they don’t want to compromise with the result of their hair restoration procedure.

Patients need to know that the transplanted hair could be vulnerable in the first 4 days after a hair transplant surgery. The most important day is the first day after surgery in which we usually bring patients back in one of our hair transplant offices at Encino, Los Angeles, Beverly Hills or Tustin in Orange County to wash their hair professionally. For more on the hair wash and post operative care of the transplanted hair, you can read on Dos and Don’ts after hair transplant in hair restoration web blog.

Washing after hair transplant surgery should be very particular in the first four day, but after day 4 following a hair restoration surgery, transplanted hair follicles become part of your skin and you cannot dislodge them even if you remove hair. I usually recommend that my patients follow our washing and after hair transplant care directions on the first four days to minimize scabbing after hair transplant surgery and don’t use any other products.

In the case of this patient at four weeks after hair transplant, he should be able to wash and rinse his hair the way he usually does without being worried about losing his valuable transplanted hair grafts.

I WAS VERY DISAPPOINTED IN MY HAIR TRANSPLANT. FIRST OF ALL, IT WAS VERY PAINFUL. I HAD HEADACHES FORWEEKS. MY HEAD HAD SCABS FOR 2-3MONTHS. SO MUCH OF MY OWN HAIR FELL OUT DO TO TRAUMA AND I HAVE MANY SPOTS THAT WERE MISSED THAT EITHER THE GRAFT DIDN’T TAKE: MY OWN HAIR DIDN’T COME BACK OR THEY NEGLECTED TO PUT A GRAFT THERE. I SPENT ALOT OF MONEY FOR WHAT I WENT THROUGH AND FOR MY RESULTS! NOT HAPPY AT ALL I WOULD LIKE TO HEAR IF ANYONE ELSE HAD HAD SUCH AN EXPERIENCE. I ONLY HERE OF THE WONDERFUL RESULTS.

I am sorry to hear your story with your bad hair transplant surgery. Like any other surgeries, hair transplant can be complicated and different hair transplant doctors have individual standards. However due to the nature of the procedure it is generally safe with a high success rate.

Headaches for weeks is extremely unusual. All patients have some pain on the donor area the first night after surgery that is easily controllable with pain medications and most patients don’t even need pain medication for the first day after their hair transplant.

Hair wash is very important in reducing and minimizing the extent of scabbing. We offer hair wash for all patients the day after surgery and teach how to wash hair in the first few days after hair transplant. Washing should be done meticulously and frequently to clear up the scabs soon.

Loss of hair after hair transplant is called shock loss that used to be a big problem in the past, but now we do have medications that can prevent or significantly minimize it. I put all my male patients on finasteride for a few months after hair transplant to prevent shock loss.

I recommend that you see a good hair transplant surgeon and discuss the problem you had or have.

    Good luck,
